It’s really easy to just skip out on self care after a long day. Sometimes the most I can do when I get home is kick off my shoes and swap coffee for wine. Less than ideal as it’s a shortcut, temporary fix and more like indulgence than care. Not evil…maybe okay every so often, but not as a routine.
I’ve never been the pampering type, more of a tomboy…but I can’t deny the benefits of taking the time to care for my body, skin, mind…etc.
Anything worth valuing is worth caring for…
YOU ARE WORTH VALUING. YOU DESERVE TO BE CARED FOR!
The daily grind, the rush, pollution, fast food, toxic people…many things can chip away at your health and peace of mind. You need to counteract the onslaught of energy drainers with things that replenish your well.
When the well’s dry, we know the worth of water. – Benjamin Franklin
Ignoring the need to care for yourself over the long term erodes your resilience. Until one day you find your well is dry and you have nothing left for anyone else let alone yourself.
The love and attention you always thought you wanted from someone else, is the love and attention you first need to give yourself. – Bryant McGillns
Why wait for or expect someone else to do what is ultimately your responsibility?
Why indeed and why do I constantly need the reminder?
Seems I’ve stuck on this theme before..
I happened over the weekend to be flicking through an old art journal from a few years back and found this spread. Message received loud & clear! Oh, and what about that big red heart? Prophetic, no?
So, my key take out…It is your job…no, your privilege to take time for you.
Take time to…
- Have a facial
- Go to a yoga class
- Take a day off for yourself
- See a therapist or counsellor
- Hug trees and friends
- Get regular medical & dental checkups
- Take a soak in a warm tub
- Get a manicure
- Swap coffee for herbal teas (ok maybe not your much needed first one in the morning)
- Drink lots of pure water
- Have a Reiki treatment
- Laugh out loud
- Take 10 minutes out to meditate
- Get a massage
- Lie on the grass (while wearing sunscreen of course..that pesky hole in the ozone)
- Go to an art gallery
- Hop on the bike and go for a ride
- Snuggle up with your pets or volunteer at a shelter
- Take a walk on the beach and watch the sunset
- Eat non processed &/or organic food
- Buy low chemical &/or organic beauty products
- Visit a float tank…I think I’d like that…it’s on my bucket list
Ok, so not all these things are doable on a daily basis. Not everything I’ve listed is everyone’s cup of tea either. This is my list for self care. You may have a different set of rituals that will soothe & heal you.
Admittedly some of these suggestions require the funds to do them. I’ve chosen not to afford most of the things on my list for the time being due to a self imposed tight budget. I did however make the mistake however of doing nothing. I have other options. I can give myself a manicure or a facial for a start. I just need to do things for myself that make me feel amazing on a regular basis.
So, I’m stepping up the self care. Right now, and for the rest of the year. If you’ve been putting yourself last too… I encourage you to do the same and join me.
In fact, to hold myself accountable I’m going to track my progress informally using the hash tag #stepuptheselfcare on my social media accounts.
I’d love to hear some of your ideas on what works for you.
From my heart to yours
