You already have a niche, even if you don’t know it yet yourself.
That’s certainly my story.
Firstly…what the hell am I talking about when I’m referring to the word niche?
Let’s get straight with that before I continue…
Definition of niche in English: noun
(one’s niche) A comfortable or suitable position in life or employment:
Source: Oxford Dictionary – niche
My previous 4 attempts at blogging failed primarily because I wasn’t clear on what I was writing about and who I was writing for. I just knew I needed to write. I also then didn’t show up on the page very often because I treated it like a hobby, and up until recently I had very little time for play….but I digress!
I knew that if I was going to give blogging a red hot go this year that I needed to get clear on my ‘what’ and ‘why’. A flurry of mind maps ensued with different blends of my interests, background and experiences. The picture got clearer the more I explored but it really got consolidated when I bounced ideas off my close friends and husband. Your loved ones can be a great mirror. They often recognise parts of you that you hide or minimise.
Getting back to the dictionary definition, my niche needed to feel both comfortable to me and suit my personality.Your niche is an extension of who you are at your essence and an expression of your gifts. Click To Tweet
This means it’s not necessarily just 1 thing! Usually it’s a unique blend of two or more things that only you can bring into being in that exact way. If it was just a single thing, we would all deliver our soul work in the exact same manner. Boring!
Also, I believe that you don’t ‘find’ your niche but you ‘uncover’ it. It is there waiting within you and it needs to be birthed by you out into the world.Your niche is your vehicle to help others. Click To Tweet
Here are some questions to explore to help you uncover your niche:
- What do you love talking about when you meet new people?
- What do you know a lot about and still want to know more about?
- What do others ask you about?
- What topics do you find yourself sharing regularly in conversation and on social media?
- What you do you read about when you have that spare 5 minutes when you are waiting for someone?
- What did you always want to do but never followed because you or others told you it was frivolous?
- What would you do with your time if you suddenly had 3 months off with pay?
So what is my niche? My perfect combo of skills & passion?
